Project:Moments Intercepted

"Jeff Stevenson"

Occupation: Artist
Location: Flossmoor, IL

Why does this project interest me?
I teach creativity classes and workshops and I am always looking for inventive ways to ignite creativity in others.  I like to practice what I preach and have embarked on a number of my own projects that challenge studio habits such as 100 drawings in 100days that led to 100 collages on record album covers and a recent residency at Ragdale where I made a 30 foot long work on paper inspired by the exquisite corpse concept.

Challenge: *Challenge 6: Make your next meal a work of art

Cookie Deck

As a collage artist I had not worked much with images of food unless it was just accidental found imagery.  So I searched our cook book shelves and found a Christmas Cookie Recipe card deck, like playing cards, that we had never used and probably won’t ever use.  The images are beautiful so I sorted them by color and found interesting shapes and connections in the photos (that I will continue to bring out with other scraps of collage material).  Once I found the combination of cards that I liked, I matched them up with a vintage LP record album cover and a drawing on cardboard, both elements I had in my studio waiting to come together.  This unexpected flurry of creativity emerged from the challenge “make your next meal a work of art” and it would not have happened in this way without it.  I have 6 in the works now.  Here is my favorite, and a photo of all six – however all of them are “in progress” and will evolve.  But I love this beginning.  Thanks (re)collection project!

when they are finished they will be uploaded to:

Challenge: *Challenge 5: Make or take a portrait of a stranger

Stranger Portrait

I was taking secret pictures all day of people I saw on the streets, at the museum, and in the train station.  I like when people are absorbed in their device and I think it would make an interesting portrait series.  I also anticipate using this one for an oil portrait in a new series of mixed media pieces.

Challenge: *Challenge 3: Reveal something hidden

Two Men Kissing

Two men kissing is still hidden in our culture.  When made visible there is often reaction, like the Facebook censorship for the image that the drawing is made from – a very run of the mill image of two people kissing who happen to be men – yet complaints, reports, and attacks caused FB to take it down from the person’s page who posted it.  Why?  I believe it has to do with many fundamental beliefs of our culture having everything to do with war, training men to kill, satisfying the needs of the cultural system.  That is why it must be hidden, and now must be revealed.

Challenge: *Challenge 2: Make something old new

Throw Rhymes

Make something old new.  An old book of poetry by Robert Browning, the poem “My Star” reworked and combined with a new combination of ideas.  What is older than the stars?  What is newer than our creativity, impulses, and ideas?

All that I know

Of a certain star

Is, it can throw

(Like the angled spar)

Now a dart of red,

Now a dart of blue;

Till my friends have said

They would fain see, too,

My star that dartles the red and the blue!

Then it stops like a bird; like a flower, hangs furled:

They must solace themselves with the Saturn above it.

What matter to me if their star is a world?

Mine has opened its soul to me; therefore I love it.
