Project:Moments Intercepted

"Melissa Penney"

Occupation: I make things.
Location: Toronto

Why does this project interest me?
I have worked with Labspace Studio before (participating in the "Hydro Hike" and "Snow Days" projects) and have found the experiences to be beneficial to my art practice as well as to how I look at the 'everyday' world.  Deconstructing notions of home and 'moments of meditation' has been my focus over the past year. These appropriations of a place that is difficult to define, a nowhere or ‘no-place’ (as well as thoughts on space and time) have become a common theme within my work. I don’t necessarily intend to answer all the questions I ask, but merely wish to inspire thought on the subject matter of which I present. I always research and play with materials before I create any work. Nonetheless, I never wish to claim full intentionality and hope to allow the viewer to claim their own experience and come to their own conclusions. I also have a fascination with birds and nests - the natural world is constantly inspiring me. I like the discovery approach to 'creating' and 'making' that the past projects I have participated in have encouraged. I also enjoy collaborating with others and experimenting.

This is an owl made from “trash”; a cork from a preserve jar, wood shavings from a piece of furniture, as well as acorn tops, over-sized brass grommets, and a screw-driver bit.
